Online Gambling
Canadians are allowed to gamble online as long as you are
of legal gambling age within your province.
Private gambling
Legal in Canada, providing there is no house commission.
Gambling is legal as long as every player has an equal chance
of winning without a "house edge". When the house
takes a "rake", or makes a profit with a percentage
of each pot, or when they take a "session fee",
or any other charge for playing poker is when it becomes illegal.
The reason is because the government wants a cut, once you
start collecting money from the players.
If you are hosting a tournament, a good way to avoid any
problems is to provide a service for the entry fee. For example,
if you want to charge each person $40, provide the players
with food, drinks or some souvenir like a hat. This way, you
won't be charging them for the service of playing poker, but
for the item that you are giving them.
